Clay Bar Paint Decontamination
What we see in Portland garages
Your paint may look clean but feel rough - that's bonded contamination: rail dust, brake dust, industrial fallout, tree sap residue, paint overspray, and other stuff that's stuck to your clear coat at a level no wash will remove. The fix is clay bar decontamination, where we lift those contaminants off mechanically using a specialized clay or clay-mitt with proper lubricant.
How we approach it
After a proper clay-bar treatment, paint goes from sandpaper-rough to glass-smooth. It's the prerequisite for any wax, sealant, polish or ceramic coating - products won't bond properly to contaminated paint. It's also a noticeable upgrade just on its own; cars feel and look better immediately.
What to expect on the day
Mobile to your driveway or drop-off at our partner facility. Most cars take 1–2 hours. Strongly recommended before any sealant, polish or coating service.
What's included
Every job comes with the same checklist. No surprises.
- Foam pre-soak and full hand wash
- Iron-remover application (chemical decontamination)
- Tar and bug remover where needed
- Full clay-bar (or clay-mitt) treatment on every painted panel
- Glass clay-bar pass for water-spot/etched glass
- Final hand-rinse and dry
- Spray sealant for short-term protection (or coating-ready prep)
How it works
Wash
Loose dirt removed first - clay can't lift bonded contaminants through loose grit.
Iron-remover
Chemical step lifts iron-based fallout (rail dust, brake dust) before claying. Often turns the car purple as it works.
Clay every panel
Hand-clay or clay-mitt with proper lubricant on every painted panel until completely smooth.
Inspect and protect
Confirm smoothness with the 'baggie test', then apply spray sealant or leave coating-ready.
Why this matters in the Pacific Northwest
The PNW is brutal on paint
PNW commuters pick up brake dust and road rail-grime constantly. Most cars in the area have meaningful bonded contamination by the 1-year mark.
Why technique actually matters
Vancouver and Camas drivers crossing into WA pick up bridge-deck steel dust - we specifically see more iron contamination on those cars.
City vs. backroad realities
Clay-bar work is a step almost no consumer car wash includes. It's also impossible to feel the contamination until you've felt the difference after a proper clay job.
What affects the price
Every property is different. These are the things we look at when we quote.
- Vehicle size
- Severity of contamination
- Whether stacked with a polish or ceramic coating
- Glass clay (recommended for older glass with water spots)
